The acclaimed artist and designer Aitor Throup continues to celebrate the power of imagination through TheDSA platform by enlisting the globally-renowned, cutting edge magician Dynamo for its latest campaign; revealed today to coincide with the global retail launch of the project’s second series. The highly curated collection of images showcase Throup’s idiosyncratic approach to portraiture by weaving a classically lit aesthetic into layered surrealist narratives reflecting the fantastical nature of Dynamo’s craft whilst merging with Throup’s own illustrated world.

TheDSA is a design system and aesthetic language that serves as a conceptual representation of the paradox of Throup’s ‘left-brain’ being as over-active as his ‘right-brain’. The numerical archiving system – which denotes the unique number attributed to each sketch in Throup’s on-going daily drawing practice – directly reflects his left-brain’s need for structure, logic and order. The floating illustrations obscure the numerical components representing the expressive, explosive and rebellious nature of his right-brain. The addition of black to the offer further cements the duality of balance.

Aitor Throup started drawing a sketch every single day over nine years ago, utilizing the disciplined practice as a sort of daily therapy, allowing him to express his feelings impulsively without the need for a specific purpose or reason. This free approach to creative expression is a mechanism that helps Throup reconnect with his pure and raw inner child; something that he believes is imperative for our mental health; and something that he believes is at the core of Dynamo’s craftsmanship as one of the world’s leading magicians.

There is a lot that Dynamo and I share in our stories. We both had pretty tough childhoods, and grew up a few miles from each other, with a very similar northern-English working class backdrop. Where I think we connect at a deeper level though, is our shared commitment to continue to explore, refine and share that magical feeling that we both experienced as children, and which helped us navigate our paths…
