TAICHI MURAKAMI SPRING/SUMMER 2019 COLLECTION

A Brief History On Taichi Murakami

Taichi Murakami (stylised as ‘taichimurakami’) is the eponymous artisanal label of the Japanese designer, first emerging in 2012. Inspired by the subtle intricacies of prominent avant-garde designer Maurizio Amadei (of m.a+) whilst working at Lift as a student, Murakami set his sights on working at the Italian atelier.

Soon enough the opportunity presented itself when Murakami travelled to Milan as part of his studies. Amadei subsequently hired him as a patternmaker in 2009, and the next 3 years allowed Murakami time to develop his signature patternmaking techniques.

Murakami’s call to fame boils down to his meticulous attention to detail. Experimental in nature, Murakami garments seem deceptively simple but upon inspection house a multitude of subtle differences. The fabric for each piece is carefully chosen for its physical properties regarding the way it lays on the body and the pattern is modified to accommodate the fabric’s behaviour. From thick ramie blends to Cuben fiber to steel-ingrained threading, Murakami is no stranger to utilising the unconventional to produce bold, structured pieces.

WATCHCASE NECKLACE

Fashioned entirely out of sterling silver, the watchcase necklace complements Murakami’s timeless aesthetics, both literally and metaphorically. A curio that gives an archaic feel through its deliberately worn patina, it hangs off the wearer’s neck and elicits intrigue, as any Murakami piece should.

MOUNTAIN PARKA ORIGAMI SLEEVE

The Mountain Parka is an iconic Murakami piece reinvented this season with subtle changes. With an asymmetrical front zip, large functional hood, and taped interior seams as design staples, Murakami adds a panelled sleeve detail for a contrasting effect.

WORK BLAZER SNOW

Structured and form-fitting, Murakami’s Work Blazer functions in both casual and more formal settings. The contrasting “snow” pattern is embroidered, providing a unique textured feel to the jacket and showcasing Murakami’s keen sense of detail.

Opting for a cleaner look, Murakami constructs a thin, full-frame pair of spectacles which are inoffensive and minimal. Primarily using titanium, the frame is lightweight and resilient, with polymer-tipped arms for comfort.

B-MEGANE TITAN FRAME

A companion piece to the B-Megane, this tinted clip-on attachment provides glare protection without the need for another frame. The thin bridge is flexible enough for ease of use but still strong enough for utility.
